If you’re a therapist, you can make a life-changing impact by offering one free hour of therapy per week to a current or former foster youth.

A Home Within is dedicated to ensuring that individuals that have experienced foster care have at least one stable, caring relationship. Our volunteer clinicians provide open-ended, individual psychotherapy—allowing clients and therapists, rather than funding constraints, to determine the length of care.

As the only national organization focused on the lifelong impact of foster care trauma, we support our volunteers with research, ongoing education, and virtual clinical consultation. Our community of therapists plays a vital role in creating lasting healing and growth opportunities for foster youth.

Join us in making a difference! You can contribute by offering therapy, becoming a continuing education instructor, leading a consultation group, or spreading the word about A Home Within. Read more about our volunteer opportunities below.

There is something powerful about practicing without money being involved. The beauty of the child takes center stage, as it always should, and it’s rewarding in a way that my other work isn’t.

Consultation Group Leader
Chapter Director

Clinician

The heart of the organization, Volunteer Clinicians donate one hour per week of open-ended, individual psychotherapy to a current or former foster youth for as long as it takes. At A Home Within, therapy is person-centered, with the frequency, duration, and modality determined within the relational principles of “voice and choice.” This means the client and therapist choose the length of the services rather than having it determined by fiscal or administrative requirements or limitations.

If you would like to join A Home Within’s nationwide network of Volunteer Clinicians, all we need from you is:

  • An active license or associate license*** to practice psychotherapy
  • Your completed volunteer registration form and a 20-minute meeting with staff and/or the local Chapter Director
  • **Associate therapists nearing the end of their hours with a supervisor may contact us here for more information on how to join us!

Following an initial meeting, we’ll ask for a copy of your CV/resume, liability insurance, professional license, and three professional references.

Consultation Group Leader

Volunteer Consultation Group Leaders are responsible for leading and maintaining regular group meetings where clinicians can get support around their cases. Typically, Consultation Group Leaders are seasoned clinicians who have deep knowledge of trauma and the foster care population. Consultation Group Leaders and group members together determine the length and frequency of their group. Consultation groups can meet in person or through video conference.

If you’d like to join A Home Within’s distinguished community of Consultation Group Leaders, all we need from you is:

  • An active license to practice psychotherapy
  • Your completed volunteer registration form and a 20- to 30-minute meeting with staff and/or the local Chapter Director
  • A copy of your CV/resume, liability insurance, and three professional references
  • A passion for facilitating a small group once per month
Chapter Director

Volunteer Chapter Directors work with staff to provide local leadership in their A Home Within chapters. The time commitment is approximately two hours per week and the primary responsibility is to ensure Volunteer Clinicians join consultation groups as needed, receive continuing education to enrich their professional development, and are meaningfully connected to and supported by the broader A Home Within community.

If you’d like to donate your expertise, help ensure our volunteers experience a sense of belonging to A Home Within, and make an impact in your local community, all we need from you is:

  1. An active license to practice psychotherapy, PhD, or other applicable experience
  2. Your completed volunteer registration form and 20- to 30-minute meeting with staff
  3. A copy of your resume/CV, liability insurance, professional license, and three professional references
Ambassador

Ambassadors help us reach potential volunteer therapists and clients across the country, while receiving opportunities to network with professionals in the mental health field. This role is appropriate for those who enjoy outreach and do not necessarily have a clinical background.

If you’re a therapist who is interested in becoming an ambassador, this volunteer role also includes access to all of A Home Within’s free clinical offerings such as consultation groups and access to our CE library.

We hope you’ll join us! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our Recruitment Director Emily Yang at eyang@ahomewithin.org.
