Chrissy
Okay, thank you so much for joining me and participating in the 300 new volunteers in our 30th year, we truly could not do it without you, so thank you so much for being a part of it, and thanks for doing this little project with me. We'll just get right into our questions. So the first question I have is, why did you decide to join A Home Within?
William
I think I mentioned to you how I had kind of gotten to a point – well, that sounds like a definitive point, but I have just always felt like a major part of my being is to try to give back from this position that I'm existing in, where I have a lot of opportunities and life has been very good to me. I think that some people enter into the world in much more disadvantaged positions or challenging situations. And so I try to, you know, help in some way.
Chrissy
That’s beautiful. And you had joined A Home Within years ago, I think, but then didn't actually quite get off the ground with volunteering, and then this time around, it's moving forward a little bit faster. Is that right?
William
No, actually I volunteered, for I think it was like, I want to say it was over a year. I was working with – it could have been two different people over the course of the time that I was working. You know my memory is a bit fuzzy on it, because it was actually quite a while ago. But I do recall one person in specific, but I think it was actually two different people – something happened during the course of the treatment where they couldn't continue, or something like that happened. And then, you know, I got another person.
Chrissy
Nice. Well, we're so glad you made your way back to us now, it's so nice to have you back.
William
Chrissy
If you were speaking to someone who was considering volunteering with A Home Within but wasn't sure yet, what might you say to that person?
William
You can always try it out and see what you think. And yeah, ironically, the first experience, the first person that I was matched with this time was a good example. You'll have a better sense once you start a process, whether or not it feels right for you. It'll either show itself to you that it's not possible, or it's not something that's kind of in alignment with what you're trying to do, or maybe you’ll have a stronger sense of what decision you'd like to make. But you won't know until you try it.
Chrissy
Absolutely. It's a good, good way to look at it. Just give it a shot and see what happens! You're not stuck anywhere. That’s good. And so, either in your previous experience volunteering with us, or now, or both – however it works to answer the question – what have you enjoyed most about volunteering with A Home Within?
William
I liked being surprised – which is something I encounter in my own life on a regular basis – with a unique individual when I meet a person. It's kind of like I'm reading a book or something about my life story, and I don't know what the next page is gonna hold, or what it’s gonna be. And then I meet somebody. And I'm like, “Oh, this is so fascinating! This is really kind of intriguing and interesting.” And so it's nice.
Chrissy
That's great. The basis of A Home Within back when it was founded in the nineties, was very much the psychodynamic, relational approach to therapy. So I've heard so many good stories of people just developing a wonderful rapport with their client and having it be a really fun relationship for the therapist themself as well as the client. So that's great. And on the flip side of that, what do you think has been the most challenging part about your work with A Home Within?
William
I think, I went into this wanting to help. And sometimes you don't get to choose what happens. Actually, not sometimes. I think you don't actually ever really get to choose and you have to kind of go with what's happening, and accept the situations. And I I think that there were some moments where it was a little bit challenging for me to do that, like, I said, because I'm coming into this with a desire to help. So when a situation doesn't work out, I have to accept it. And I don't mean “I have to accept that” as a punitive statement. I mean it more of like, it requires relinquishing my desire to help momentarily.
Chrissy
Yeah. It's tricky, because clients have their preferences and what they want in a clinician. And it's an interesting sort of dynamic, because a volunteer is coming to you to offer their time and energy, but then the client does still have choice, and so they can say no if they want to. That's a tricky line to kind of walk, I imagine, as the volunteer. But to the next question, what would you say is the most special part about A Home Within to you?
William
Feeling the appreciation that a person expresses, for feeling valued, seen. I'd love to do nothing more than [give that to my client].
Chrissy
Wonderful. So when you look at since you started volunteering with us, when you look at your work with A Home Within, what sort of impact would you say it's had on your personal life or your professional experience, or otherwise?
William
It is a subtle reminder that people are, you know, in different situations. Even though I try to regularly be cognizant of that, it is another form of reflecting that back to me. And personally, I feel like I'm making a difference. I feel like I'm doing some good. I also feel like, it sounds kind of funny, but how lucky we are that we found each other under such unusual circumstances!
Chrissy
That's beautiful. Great! Well, I'm onto my favorite question that I get to ask my volunteers, which gives me an opportunity to learn more about you outside of A Home Within. So what are some other projects or accomplishments outside of your volunteer work that you're most proud of, or most excited about?
William
Do you mean things that are related to psychology, or anything?
Chrissy
Anything, yeah. Anything at all.
William
I'm really happy because I have been saying to myself for I don't even know how many summers in a row that I need to stop working on projects all the time and carve out some time to go down to the beach and enjoy the beautiful ocean and surf, and be out on the water while the sun's setting. And I get to do that, and I live here, and it's available to me every day. So just doing it more consistently has felt really, really nice. That has been a nice sort of change. And I've also been able to manage my projects without becoming consumed by them. So, this last year I was – I'm not a contractor – but I wanted to learn how to build a house. I felt like it was something I wanted to know how to do before I was no longer here. And so I did it. And then I wanted to write a book, and so now I'm in that process. But I'm still able to go to the beach and enjoy it.
Chrissy
Good for you! Those are huge things to manage while also enjoying the beach. So, good job. You're making me jealous – I grew up in California, but I'm living in the panhandle of Idaho now, and I'm like, “I miss my coast! I miss my beach!” We have beautiful lakes and forests here and everything, but it's a different landscape, for sure.
William
Yeah. Did you grow up going to the beach, or was it more of an inland experience?
Chrissy
No, I grew up on the coast in San Luis Obispo. Just like a, you know, under 10-minute drive to the beach, so I was there all the time. I don't surf or anything, but just being at the beach is a powerful experience with the ocean and the sun and the sand, and I miss it. But it'll always be home, so I'll always have it to go back to.
William
Chrissy
Yeah. Well, good. So those are the questions we had picked out for the conversation, but before we close together, I just wanted to open it in case you have anything you want to say or anything you want to leave us with.
William
Thank you, it seems like you do a lot for the organization, you’re super helpful, super cheerful, so thank you, too!
Chrissy
Absolutely, it’s my pleasure! It’s a fun job. Thank you, William – it was fun to get to know you a little bit more and hear more of your background and other projects you’re working on. Enjoy the beach, enjoy the book writing, enjoy the house building!
William
Totally, thanks! And I hope you enjoy the things that you’re into, as well!
Chrissy
Thank you so much! We’ll connect again soon. Bye.
William
